From students to retirees, many people are proud to call Kingston home. Let’s explore a few of Kingston’s 43 neighbourhoods to see what they offer.
One of Kingston’s oldest neighbourhoods, Alwington carries a lot of history. Kingston Penitentiary, is located here, as are a number of historic mansions like Sir John A. MacDonald’s former home. The majority of homes in the neighbourhood were built pre-1940s but have undergone a range of renovations—homes are known to be spacious and well-built, with amazing amenities nearby. Queen’s University is just a short walk away from the heart of Alwington, making it a great place for students and university staff to reside. Williamsville is a bustling neighbourhood filled with residents and businesses. It’s close enough to the downtown activity while still possessing a good amount of green space balance, which makes it enjoyable for all. The Kingston waterfront is nearby, giving access to all of the year round festivals and activities that take place there. The Kingston Memorial Centre Arena is located in Williamsville, providing a space to enjoy sporting activities and events. The Sydenham neighbourhood possesses some of the city’s most gorgeous limestone buildings, and is a great mix of property types from older homes to rental apartments. Sydenham has some of Kingston’s best restaurants and most stunning cathedrals and historic buildings. Located here is Springer Square, the heart of the downtown core.
For young families, Cataraqui River East is the ideal neighbourhood. The majority of residents in Cataraqui River East are couples, followed by families with one child. Top leisure activities in the neighbourhood include visiting restaurants, fairs, and markets, with golf courses and parks nearby. Inner Harbour is a lively neighbourhood filled with working-class families and post-secondary students. It’s home to the K-Rock Centre, an entertainment and sporting arena, and the Wolfe Island Ferry Terminal, so there is always lots to do in Inner Harbour.
Portsmouth Village is a fairly central neighbourhood, though it is officially located in west Kingston. With a mix of older and renovated homes, the neighbourhood balances a historic and modern feel. This area has the Portsmouth Olympic Harbour, which was used in the 1976 Montreal Olympics, and is still used today. It also has access to some of the best stores and restaurants in Kingston, with proximity to Queen’s University’s West Campus, Lake Ontario Park, and more. Grenville Park has a mix of ranch-style family homes with newer apartment complexes, with access to shopping centres, plazas, and more. With a large amount of parkland, Grenville Park offers a country vibe with urban proximity, giving the best of both worlds for residents.
